Description
The Language Centre at La Trobe University is situated
in Melbourne, the most cosmopolitan epicentre on the
Australian continent. Melbourne has a reputation for
having the best restaurants, art galleries and shopping
centres in the country. It is also home to some of the
most prestigious events, such as the Melbourne Cup,
the Australian Open Tennis Championship, the Grand Prix
(Formula One and Motorcycle) and shows such as the Comedy
Festival. The Victorian National Gallery is renowned
throughout the world for its fine collection of traditional
Australian paintings and works of art.
Academics
The teaching objective is to develop skills needed for
understanding and using the English language accurately
and fluently to achieve effective communication on an
international level. Teaching also focuses on helping
students to become more independent as learners and
users of English. Various different teaching methods
are used such as individual work, work in partners,
group work and individual and group projects. Instruction
methods point to English usage for effective communication
and involve listening, speaking, reading and writing
on several different interesting and useful subjects.
Achieved goals regarding the study plan are expressed
in the following way: “Can write notes and short
informal letters” (as from level 2); “Can
participate effectively in discussions, debates and
formal simulations based on present day problems”
(as from level 5).
